# Canvas shortcuts

The Canvas has its own keyboard shortcuts for creating nodes, moving between agents and arranging the board. The main ones can be remapped; the rest are fixed.

## Where it is

-   Remap in **Settings › Integrations › Canvas › Canvas shortcuts**.
-   The **More tools and shortcuts** button in the Canvas toolbar lists the most used keys.

## How to use it

1.  Open **Settings › Integrations › Canvas** and scroll to **Canvas shortcuts**.
2.  Click the field next to an action. It shows **Press keys…**.
3.  Press the new combination. If another action already used it, that action loses it and shows **None**.
4.  Press `⌫` (macOS) / `Backspace` to clear a shortcut, or click **Reset** to go back to the default.

## Shortcuts you can remap

Note

The workspace sidebar also uses `⇧⌘N` (macOS) / `Ctrl+Shift+N`, for **New workspace**. If that key opens the new-workspace form, press N on an empty canvas to add a note, or give **New sticky note** another key.

### With a node selected

| Key | Action |
| --- | --- |
| `↩` (macOS) / `Enter` | Focus the node (type into a terminal or a note) |
| Arrows, or H J K L | Move the selection to the nearest node in that direction |
| `⌥` (macOS) / `Alt` + arrows | Nudge the node; add `⇧` (macOS) / `Shift` for a bigger step |
| Z | Focus the selection, press again to fly back |
| X twice | Close the node |
| Space (tap) | Lift the node over the board, tap again to put it back |

### Inside a focused terminal

-   Leave the terminal and return to the canvas: `⇧esc` (macOS) / `Shift+Esc`. `esc` (macOS) / `Esc` alone goes to the program running in the terminal.
-   Find in terminal: `⌘F` (macOS) / `Ctrl+Shift+F`.
-   Clear: `⌘K` (macOS) / `Ctrl+Shift+K`.
-   Scroll lock: `⇧⌘B` (macOS) / `Ctrl+Shift+B`.
-   Copy and paste: `⌘C` (macOS) / `Ctrl+Shift+C` and `⌘V` (macOS) / `Ctrl+Shift+V`.

### Workspaces

-   Switch to workspace one to nine: `⌃1` (macOS) / `Alt+1` to `⌃9` (macOS) / `Alt+9`.
-   Previous or next workspace: `⌘↑` (macOS) / `Ctrl+↑` and `⌘↓` (macOS) / `Ctrl+↓`.
-   New workspace: `⇧⌘N` (macOS) / `Ctrl+Shift+N`.
-   Show or hide the sidebar: `⌘S` (macOS) / `Ctrl+S`.

## Common problems

### A shortcut does nothing

Check that the canvas has focus: click an empty spot first. While you type in a terminal, a note or a text field, the canvas keys go to that field instead.

### I changed a shortcut and want the old one back

Click **Reset** next to it in **Settings › Integrations › Canvas › Canvas shortcuts**.
