# Folders and names

These settings decide where every download lands and what the file is called. They also cover skipping files you already have, capping the download speed and turning duplicate files into links to one copy.

## Where it is

- **Settings › Downloads › Files and folders**: the folder, asking every time, skipping existing files.
- **Settings › Downloads › Output**, under **Show advanced options**: subfolders per platform, the filename template and the speed limit.
- **Settings › Advanced › Storage**: **Deduplicate downloads**.

## How to use it

### Pick the download folder

1. Open **Settings › Downloads › Files and folders**.
2. Next to **Default folder**, click **Choose** and pick a folder.

Every download goes there unless you pick another folder on Home, a [rule](https://getomniget.com/docs/rules) sends it elsewhere, or **Always ask where to save** is on. With **Always ask where to save** on, OmniGet shows a save dialog for every download.

### Change how files are named

1. Open **Settings › Downloads › Output** and click **Show advanced options**.
2. Edit **Filename template**. It uses the yt-dlp output template syntax, for example `%(uploader)s - %(title)s.%(ext)s`.
3. Check the **Preview:** line under the box, which shows an example name.
4. Click **Save** in the bar that appears.

The default template is `%(title).200s [%(id)s].%(ext)s`: the title (cut to a safe length), the video ID in brackets, then the extension. The template must contain `%(ext)s`, or OmniGet refuses to save it. Fields you can use include `%(title)s`, `%(id)s`, `%(uploader)s`, `%(upload_date)s`, `%(resolution)s`, `%(fps)s` and `%(duration)s`.

### Sort downloads by site

Turn on **Organize by platform** in **Output**. Each download then goes into a subfolder named after its platform inside the download folder.

### Skip files you already have

**Skip existing files** is on by default: when a file with the same name already exists in the output folder, OmniGet does not download it again. Turn it off to download such files again.

### Cap the download speed

In **Output**, type a number in **Download speed limit** and pick **KB/s** or **MB/s**. Leave it empty for **No limit**. The same limit can be changed from the menu at the top of the [Queue](https://getomniget.com/docs/queue).

### Deduplicate files

When the same file sits in two places, deduplicating keeps the content once on disk.

1. Open **Settings › Advanced › Storage**.
2. Next to **Deduplicate downloads**, click **Deduplicate…**.
3. Pick the files to check. A folder you download to often is a good start.
4. OmniGet hashes each file with SHA-256 and links files with the same content to one stored copy. It then shows **Linked … files** and, on macOS and Linux, how much space it saved.

The line under **Deduplicate downloads** shows how many files are stored and the space saved so far.

Warning

Use it only on files on the same drive as OmniGet’s data folder. On another drive the files cannot be linked, and OmniGet keeps a copy of each one in its store, which takes more space, not less.

Note

Linked files share their content on disk (hard links): editing one of them in place changes the others too. On Windows, OmniGet cannot measure the space saved.

## Options

| Option | What it does | Default |
| --- | --- | --- |
| **Default folder** | Where downloads are saved. | Your system’s Downloads folder |
| **Always ask where to save** | Shows a save dialog for every download. | Off |
| **Skip existing files** | Does not download a file again when it already exists in the output folder. | On |
| **Organize by platform** | Saves each download in a subfolder named after its platform. | Off |
| **Filename template** | The yt-dlp output template for file names. | `%(title).200s [%(id)s].%(ext)s` |
| **Download speed limit** | Caps the download rate, in KB/s or MB/s. | Empty (**No limit**) |
| **Deduplicate downloads** | Links files with the same content to one stored copy. | Runs only when you click **Deduplicate…** |

The rest of **Output** (music format, embedded metadata and thumbnail, `.nfo` files) is covered in [Audio only](https://getomniget.com/docs/audio) and [Subtitles and metadata](https://getomniget.com/docs/subtitles-metadata).

## Common problems

### This folder path is long

OmniGet warns when the folder path leaves little room for file names, because downloads with long names may fail. Pick a shorter folder, or shorten the **Filename template**.

### Not saved. Enter a filename template containing %(ext)s for the file extension.

The template has no `%(ext)s`. Add it at the end, for example `%(title)s.%(ext)s`, and click **Save** again.

### A download did not happen

With **Skip existing files** on, a file whose name already exists is skipped. Rename or move the old file, or turn the option off.
