# MCP servers you use

MCP servers give your agents extra tools: a file system, GitHub, a browser, documentation and more. In OmniGet you connect a server once, test it, then decide tool by tool which agents may use it; adding a server does not grant any permission.

## Where it is

**LLM › Configure › MCP**, in the **Servers you use** half. The other half, **Your endpoint**, is for the opposite direction: see [OmniGet as an MCP server](https://getomniget.com/docs/mcp-server).

## How to use it

### Add a server

1. Open **LLM › Configure › MCP** and click **Add a server**.
2. Give it a **Name** and an **Id**. The id takes lowercase letters, digits, `-` and `_`, and cannot change later.
3. Choose the **Transport**:
    - **stdio**: a program OmniGet starts. Fill in **Command**, **Arguments**, **Environment** (one `NAME=value` per line) and, if needed, **Working directory**.
    - **HTTP**: a server already running. Fill in the **URL** and **Headers** (one `Name: value` per line).
4. Leave **Enabled** on and click **Save**.
5. Click **Test**. OmniGet starts the server and lists its tools, for example “… tools in … ms”.

Tip

To keep a key out of the form, write `secret:<id>` as the value of an environment variable or header. OmniGet reads it from the system vault instead.

### Paste a config from another app

Under **Advanced settings**, **Paste a config** accepts the `mcpServers` block from Claude Desktop, Claude Code, Cursor or Windsurf. Click **Read the config**; each server opens in the form for you to review, and nothing is saved until you do.

### Start from the registry

**Registry** lists known servers, such as Filesystem, GitHub, Fetch and Playwright. **Configure** only fills the form with a working config and tells you what you still have to fill in; nothing is downloaded and nothing connects until you save and test.

## Allow tools per agent

1. Next to a server, click **Permissions**. The panel is titled **What may run on** the server.
2. For each tool and each agent, choose a mode.

| Option | What it does |
| --- | --- |
| **—** | No permission. The tool is not offered to the model at all. This is the default. |
| **Auto** | The agent uses the tool without asking. |
| **Ask** | The turn stops and waits for your approval. |
| **Deny** | The agent cannot use the tool. |

If the list is empty (**No tool yet.**), test the server first so OmniGet can discover what it exposes. The same modes appear in each agent’s **Tools and limits** ([Agents, memory and skills](https://getomniget.com/docs/agents)).

## Options

| Option | What it does | Default |
| --- | --- | --- |
| **Transport** | **stdio** or **HTTP**. | **stdio** |
| **Enabled** | Turns the server off without removing it. A disabled server shows **off**. | On |
| **Edit** / **Remove** | Change or delete the server. | |

The server list is saved in OmniGet’s data folder, and secrets in the system vault.

## Common problems

### “The server could not be started.”

For **stdio**, the **Command** was not found or failed. Run the same command in a terminal to see its error, and check the **Working directory**.

### “The server could not be reached.”

For **HTTP**, check the **URL** and that the server is running. The address must start with `http://` or `https://`.

### “No MCP server found in that text.”

**Paste a config** expects an `mcpServers` (or `servers`) block. Paste the whole JSON object, braces included.
