# Rules

A rule says: when a link matches a condition, save it in this folder, or as audio only. It saves you from picking the same folder for the same channel or site every time.

## Where it is

**Settings › Downloads › Rules**, under **Show advanced options**.

## How to use it

### Create a rule

1. Click **Add rule**.
2. Type a name in **Name this rule**.
3. Under **When**, pick the condition and type its value:
    - **Host is**: the site’s address, for example `youtube.com`. `www.` is ignored, but other subdomains are not: `m.youtube.com` does not match `youtube.com`.
    - **URL contains**: any piece of the link, for example a channel name or `/playlist`. Upper and lower case do not matter.
    - **Platform is**: the platform name OmniGet detects for the link, for example `youtube`.
4. Under **then**, click **Choose folder** and pick where the matching downloads go.
5. Tick **Audio only** if the matching links should download as audio.
6. Click **Save**.

The first rule that matches wins. Use **Move up** and **Move down** to set the order, and the **Enabled** checkbox to turn a rule off without deleting it. **Remove** deletes a rule; **Undo removal** brings it back.

### What happens when you download

When you download a link from Home and a rule matches, OmniGet shows **Rule “…” applied** and uses the rule’s folder and audio choice. What you pick by hand on Home wins over the rule: a folder you chose for that download, a mode you picked, or a format from **See formats**.

Rules apply to downloads started from Home. Downloads from the [Browser extension](https://getomniget.com/docs/extension), the [global hotkeys](https://getomniget.com/docs/clipboard-hotkeys), [Followed channels](https://getomniget.com/docs/channels) and the [Download tools](https://getomniget.com/docs/dl-tools) do not use them.

Note

A rule also has a quality field (the box that shows `1080p`). In this version Home keeps the quality from its own selector, so set the quality there.

### Test a link

1. Paste a link in **Test a link**.
2. Click **Test**.

OmniGet saves your rules first, then shows the name of the rule that catches the link, or **No rule matches this link**. The test checks **Host is** and **URL contains** rules. A **Platform is** rule needs the platform that Home detects, so try it with a real download.

## Options

| Option | What it does | Default |
| --- | --- | --- |
| **Enabled** | Turns the rule on or off. | On |
| **Name this rule** | The name shown in **Rule “…” applied** and in the test. | Empty (**Unnamed rule**) |
| **When** | **Host is**, **URL contains** or **Platform is**, plus the value. | **Host is** |
| **Choose folder** | The folder for matching downloads. | None (your **Default folder**) |
| **Audio only** | Downloads matching links as audio. | Off |

## Common problems

### The rule does not apply

- Check the order: an earlier rule that also matches wins.
- Check that you started the download from Home, and did not choose a folder or mode by hand for it.
- For **Host is**, type the exact host of the link, without a path.

### Could not save rules. Your edits are still shown; use Save to try again.

The rules file could not be written. Click **Save** again.

### Could not test this URL. Try again; this does not mean no rule matches.

The test itself failed. Run it again.
