# Subtitles and metadata

OmniGet can save subtitles next to each video and write the title, artist and cover into the file itself. These are global settings: once on, they apply to every download.

## Where it is

- Subtitles and title translation: **Settings › Downloads › Subtitles and metadata**.
- Metadata, cover and `.nfo`: **Settings › Downloads › Output** (click **Show advanced options**).

## How to use it

### Get subtitles

1. Open **Settings › Downloads › Subtitles and metadata**.
2. Turn on **Download subtitles**. Three more rows appear.
3. Pick a **Subtitle language**.
4. Turn on **Include auto-generated subtitles** if you also want captions made automatically by YouTube when no manual ones exist.
5. Download a video as usual. The subtitles are saved next to it.

Subtitles are saved as SRT. Turn on **Keep original .vtt files** to also keep the WebVTT file they were converted from.

### Translate titles

Turn on **Translate video title and description into your app language**. OmniGet asks YouTube for the title and chapter names in the language of the app. It works only for YouTube, and only when YouTube has a translation.

### Metadata and cover

In **Settings › Downloads › Output**:

- **Embed metadata** writes the title and artist into the file, so music players and file managers show them.
- **Embed thumbnail as cover** adds the video thumbnail as cover art to audio files.
- **Write .nfo sidecar for media servers** saves a `.nfo` file next to each video or audio, so Jellyfin, Kodi and Emby read the title, creator and cover.

## Options

| Option | What it does | Default |
| --- | --- | --- |
| **Download subtitles** | Saves the available subtitles next to videos (YouTube). | Off |
| **Include auto-generated subtitles** | Also saves YouTube’s automatic captions when there are no manual ones. Their quality varies. | Off |
| **Subtitle language** | The language to download. If it is missing, OmniGet takes what the source has. 9 languages to pick from. | English |
| **Keep original .vtt files** | Keeps the WebVTT file next to the converted SRT. | Off |
| **Translate video title and description into your app language** | Asks YouTube for localized titles and chapter names (YouTube only). | Off |
| **Embed metadata** | Writes title and artist info into the file. | On |
| **Embed thumbnail as cover** | Embeds the cover art into audio files. | On |
| **Write .nfo sidecar for media servers** | Saves a `.nfo` file for Jellyfin, Kodi and Emby. | Off |

The subtitle rows below **Download subtitles** only appear when it is on.

For Bilibili, danmaku comments, covers and `.nfo` files have settings of their own. See [Bilibili](https://getomniget.com/docs/bilibili).

## Common problems

### No subtitle file next to the video

The video has no subtitles in that language, or only automatic ones. Turn on **Include auto-generated subtitles**, or pick another **Subtitle language**. Subtitles are fetched for YouTube; other sites may not provide them.

### The cover is not in the video file

**Embed thumbnail as cover** adds cover art to audio files. For a media library, turn on **Write .nfo sidecar for media servers** instead.
