OmniGet vs Open Video Downloader
Open Video Downloader stays minimal; OmniGet adds torrents, an extension that sends cookies, and MCP.
Short answer
OmniGet does more with each download: parallel fragments and aria2c for speed, torrents, direct files, followed channels and an extension that forwards your login. Open Video Downloader stays minimal, with playlist filters, password fields and ARM builds on all three systems. It is also far smaller: 4.3 MB against 37.1 MB on Windows, because it fetches yt-dlp after install.

These two are the closest pair among free yt-dlp apps. Both are built on Tauri, so neither ships a whole browser, both are open source, and both hand the long tail of sites to yt-dlp. The differences are in size, platform coverage and how much each app does besides running yt-dlp.
The numbers come from each project's latest release on GitHub, read on the date at the top of the page.

What each app does
Open Video Downloader focuses on downloading what yt-dlp supports. OmniGet adds its own extractors for sites such as Instagram, X, Bilibili and Pinterest, a BitTorrent client, direct file downloads, a browser extension that forwards your login, an MCP server for coding agents and, since 0.10, AI coding agents that run in a folder with permission before every write.
Platforms and updates
Both offer installers for Windows, both Apple Silicon and Intel builds for macOS, and AppImage, .deb and .rpm for Linux, including ARM. Open Video Downloader also has a Windows on ARM installer. OmniGet shipped its latest release more recently.
Download size
Open Video Downloader wins clearly on Windows and macOS. Its installer is a small fraction of OmniGet's, which matters on slow or metered connections. On Linux the two AppImages are close. Both apps fetch or update yt-dlp outside the installer, so the installed footprint after first run is not measured here.
Which one should you pick?
- Choose OmniGet if you want one app for yt-dlp sites plus torrents, direct files and your logged-in sessions, and you may want to let Claude Code or another agent queue downloads.
- Choose Open Video Downloader if you want the smallest download, you only need the sites yt-dlp supports, or you use Windows on ARM.
Where OmniGet still loses
We publish this on purpose. It is the list we work from to make OmniGet better.
- Installer size: OmniGet's Windows installer is 37.1 MB against 4.3 MB. Find out what goes into it and what could download on first run instead.
- Windows on ARM: Open Video Downloader ships an ARM64 installer; OmniGet only runs the x64 build through emulation.
- Linux AppImage: 119 MB against 111.8 MB, close but still larger.
Trying OmniGet costs nothing
Both apps are free and keep files in normal folders, so trying OmniGet costs nothing: install it, point it at the same download folder, and keep Open Video Downloader until you decide.
