Getting started
Install
OmniGet ships as one installer per system on the download page. Pick the file for your system, check its hash if you want to be sure it is the original, and open it.
Which file to download
| System | File | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| macOS (macOS 10.15 or later) | .dmg |
One for Apple Silicon (arm64), one for Intel (x64). |
| Windows (Windows 10 or later) | Setup .exe |
A normal installer (x64). |
| Linux | .deb |
Debian, Ubuntu and their family (x64). |
| Linux | .AppImage |
Other distributions (x64). One file, no install. |
The download page suggests the file for your system and shows the SHA-256 of every file.
How to install
macOS
- Open the
.dmg. - Drag omniget into Applications.
- Open it from Applications.
Windows
- Run the setup
.exe. - Follow the installer, then open OmniGet from the Start menu.
Linux
-
.deb: install it with your software centre, or runsudo apt install ./<file>.debin the folder where you saved it. -
.AppImage: make it executable and run it:chmod +x <file>.AppImage ./<file>.AppImage
The first launch warning
OmniGet has no paid code-signing certificate, so each system asks for confirmation the first time. Check the hash (below) if you want to be sure the file is ours.
-
Windows: SmartScreen shows a blue box. Click More info, then Run anyway.
-
macOS: if Gatekeeper says the app is damaged or cannot be opened, move OmniGet to Applications and run in Terminal:
xattr -cr /Applications/omniget.app codesign --force --deep --sign - /Applications/omniget.app -
Linux AppImage: on Debian 12, Ubuntu 24.04 and newer, the AppImage needs
libfuse2. Runsudo apt install libfuse2, or use the.deb.
Check the hash
The download page shows the SHA-256 of every file. Compare it with the hash of the file you downloaded:
# macOS
shasum -a 256 <file>
# Linux
sha256sum <file>
# Windows (PowerShell)
Get-FileHash <file> -Algorithm SHA256
If the two values differ, delete the file and download it again. Security explains how releases are built and checked.
After installing
The first time OmniGet opens, a short setup installs the download engine (yt-dlp and FFmpeg) and asks a few questions. See First launch.
When a new version is out, Settings shows a banner with the new version number and an update now button. The update replaces the app and keeps your settings.
Portable mode
Portable mode keeps all of OmniGet’s data in a folder next to the program, so you can carry it on a USB stick.
- Find the folder that holds the OmniGet program file (
omniget.exeon Windows). - Create an empty file named
portable.txt(or.portable) in that folder. - Start OmniGet. It creates a
datafolder next to the program and keeps settings, cookies, the database and the download engines there. On the first portable start, it copies your current settings into it.
To check it worked, open Settings › Advanced › Storage. It shows Portable Mode and the folder in use. When portable mode is off, that line is not shown.
Where OmniGet keeps its data
Without portable mode, OmniGet uses one folder per user:
| System | Folder |
|---|---|
| macOS | ~/Library/Application Support/wtf.tonho.omniget |
| Windows | %APPDATA%\wtf.tonho.omniget |
| Linux | ~/.local/share/wtf.tonho.omniget |
Common problems
Linux: an empty window when a player opens
WebKitGTK plays media through GStreamer. Most desktops have the plugins; minimal installs may not:
sudo apt install gstreamer1.0-plugins-good gstreamer1.0-plugins-bad gstreamer1.0-libav
The antivirus removes or blocks a file
Some antivirus tools flag new apps that have no paid signature. Check the hash first. If it matches, add an exception for OmniGet. See Troubleshooting.
“yt-dlp is missing, so downloads cannot start”
The setup was skipped or the engine install failed. Click Open Settings in the banner and install it from Settings › Advanced › Dependencies. See Dependencies.
