Getting started

Introduction

OmniGet is a free desktop app for macOS, Windows and Linux that downloads video, audio, images and torrents from the links you paste, and runs AI agents next to your files. Everything happens on your computer: files come straight from the site to your disk, and there is no account and no telemetry.

What is inside

The sidebar shows the main areas. Each one has its own pages in these docs.

Area What it is for Read more
Home The box Paste a link or search. Paste a link, pick the quality, download. Text that is not a link becomes a search. Paste a link
Downloads The queue: progress, speed, pause, retry, history. Queue
LLM AI agents and coding tools: threads with Claude Code, Codex and other CLIs, chat, tasks, memory and skills. It needs an AI provider you configure or a coding CLI you already use. LLM overview
Canvas A board where terminals, agents, notes and files sit side by side. The Canvas
Superpowers Extra tools you switch on when you need them: Music, Watch, OmniTube, Read, Global Downloader, League of Legends, Telegram and washmybelly. Superpowers

OmniGet reads 1,000+ sites. A few big ones have their own extractor inside the app; the rest go through yt-dlp, the open-source download engine that OmniGet installs for you on the first launch. See Sites and engines.

What you can count on

  • Free and open source. The code is GPL-3.0. There is no paid plan and nothing is locked.
  • Local. Your downloads, settings, cookies and agent history stay in a folder on your computer.
  • No account. The local profile is a nickname and a colour, kept on this computer. See Startup and profile.
  • No telemetry. OmniGet does not report what you download or how you use it. What does leave the machine, and when, is listed in Privacy in the app.

What OmniGet is not

  • It does not break DRM or paywalls. Protected streams, paid catalogues and content behind a subscription you do not have stay out of reach. Use it for your own accounts and for content you have the right to save.
  • It is not a website or a phone app. OmniGet runs only as a desktop app on macOS, Windows and Linux. There is no web version and no Android or iOS version.
  • It is not an online service. Nobody downloads on your behalf. When a site blocks a download, OmniGet tells you why; it cannot fix the site.
  • It is not a guarantee for every site. Sites change, and a download that worked yesterday can fail today until the engine is updated. See Troubleshooting.

A typical session

  1. Copy a link in your browser.
  2. Open OmniGet. Home opens with the box Paste a link or search. Click Paste.
  3. OmniGet checks the link and shows a preview with the quality options. Change them if you want, or keep the defaults.
  4. Click the main button (Download video, Download audio, or Download with a count for playlists).
  5. The bar at the bottom of the window shows the progress. Click View downloads to open the Queue.
  6. When the file is ready, open it from the queue or from History.

Later, you may open LLM to ask an agent to summarise a downloaded video, or switch on Music to play your library. None of that is needed to download.

Where to go next

  • Install: the right file for your system and the first launch warnings.
  • First launch: the setup steps the app shows the first time.
  • The app window: sidebar, command palette, tray menu.
